Then and Now

The first few days of living with my arranged husband, in his lake facing half-bedroom apartment in Seattle, was spent getting over jet lag, getting used to the cold and wet city, figuring out how to get in and out of the apartment building, learning to cross roads and board buses, figuring out supermarkets, and getting introduced to the free public library. Then we started discussing our priorities and finance. I was without a job, and Deepayan was a Post Doc researcher with very little earning. So, the question was do we need to shift to a bigger apartment, or will we continue to stay in the small apartment and spend whatever little earning we had in seeing places. We settled for the latter of course.

So, our first leisure trip was to a place called Snoqualmie Falls, a little outside the city. We had to change 3 buses and took about 2 hours to reach there (though Deepayan had a car, he was not confident that he would find the way and we had not yet bought our first GPS device – a Tom Tom). At the Falls, we had a good time especially because it was a special sunny day, a rarity in Seattle! That was my first local longish trip, and thereafter we travelled across the country as much as we could, and also within Seattle, which is known as the emerald city of the USA, and was possibly one of the most beautiful with mountains, bays, rivers, and waterfalls around!
